For the past few days, DeepSeek R1 has been trending, surpassing OpenAI's model O1, and securing the number one spot on the Play Store. all the tech YouTubers are promoting it heavly, NVDIA lost Billions overnight, infact it turned out to be the worst nightmare of OpenAI So, what's all the hype about DeepSeek R1?
DeepSeek R1 is a state-of-the-art AI reasoning model developed by the Chinese startup DeepSeek. Founded by Liang Wenfeng,Born in 1985 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province of China, Liang Wenfeng exhibited exceptional mathematical abilities from a young age. He pursued electronic and communication engineering at Zhejiang University. DeepSeek has quickly gained recognition in the AI industry since its inception in 2023. Before founding DeepSeek, Liang co-founded a successful quantitative hedge fund called High-Flyer.

 And to be suprising DeepSeek R1 was developed with a fraction of the resources and money that OpenAI spent on ChatGPT and its other models. Reports indicate that DeepSeek R1 was created in just two months at a cost of approximately $6 million, utilizing around 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs. In contrast, OpenAI's GPT-4 (which powers ChatGPT) was developed using over 8,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with development costs exceeding $100 million and thats a massive difference isn't it?.

The driving factor behind DeepSeek's resourcefulness was the sanctions imposed by the US on exporting GPUs. This forced the Chinese startup to be creative and make the best use of the available resources.

DeepSeek R1 is open source, leading to a significant impact on Nvidia's stock, which collapsed drastically. Imagine a Chinese company disrupting America's stock market with a fraction of the money and resources that American tech giants possess. Now that it's open source, anyone can access it for free and use it to its full potential,meaning a person who spent $200 a month on o1 now can use a better model for free.

However, be cautious when downloading or using it on the web, as your data will be stored in servers located in the People's Republic of China. Given past experiences, China is not an ideal place to store your data. Instead, install it locally on your computer to ensure data privacy.
